Seven Signs Witchcraft Is Operating Through Someone Around You

1 Samuel 15:23 — “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.”

Some of you are not crazy and you are not overthinking. God is warning you. Witchcraft is real — and it is not just the dramatic supernatural variety. Much of the time it is spiritual control, manipulation, and the trafficking of demonic power through ordinary human behavior.

Recognizing a wolf in sheep’s clothing requires more than a general sense that something is wrong. The following seven signs are specific, observable patterns that indicate witchcraft may be operating through someone in your life. These are not grounds for accusation. They are grounds for discernment. You do not confront on the basis of these signs. You watch the fruit, you pray, and you act with wisdom.

Sign One: They Crave Control and Use Manipulation to Get It

Witchcraft at its core is control without consent. It is the attempt to dominate another person’s decisions through intimidation, guilt, fear, seduction, or persistent pressure. God never gave any person control over another human being — the only control He gives is self-control.

Watch for phrases like “if you don’t do this I’ll make you regret it” or “if you loved me you would” or the quiet, persistent pressure that makes you feel you have no choice. That is not a strong personality. That is a controlling spirit at work.

Sign Two: They Use Spiritual Language to Manipulate

This is the most dangerous sign because it is the hardest to push back against without feeling like you are resisting God. It manifests as “God told me you must do this” or “the Lord showed me you’re supposed to” or “if you don’t obey me you’re disobeying God.”

Field Note: Real prophecy produces freedom, aligns with Scripture, points people to Jesus, and encourages and exhorts. Witchcraft dressed as prophecy produces fear, confusion, dependency, and control. If someone’s prophetic words consistently make you feel smaller, more dependent on them, and less free — that is not prophecy. That is divination.

Sign Three: They Get Angry When You Say No or Set Boundaries

Healthy people respect boundaries. Controlling spirits hate them. The moment you say no to someone operating in witchcraft, the response is disproportionate — silent treatment, sudden rage, smear campaigns, emotional withdrawal, or veiled threats.

In Acts 16, when Paul cast the spirit of divination out of the slave girl, the people controlling her exploded — not because they were emotionally hurt but because they lost profit and control. If your no triggers warfare, your yes was never genuine agreement. It was captivity.

Sign Four: They Push to Isolate You from Godly Community

Witchcraft operates like a net. It wants to separate the target from every source of support, accountability, and covering. The method is always the same — sowing suspicion about your leaders, your spouse, your friends, your church. “They’re jealous of you. They don’t really love you. They don’t understand you like I do.”

Lions target prey that has separated from the herd. If someone is consistently working to cut you off from your covering, your community, and your counsel — regardless of how much they claim to care about you — discern it. The isolation is the trap. The attack comes after.

Sign Five: Strange Gifting Without Fruit of the Spirit

The slave girl in Acts 16 was accurate. She was speaking truth about Paul and Silas. And Paul cast the spirit out of her. The presence of supernatural gifts does not confirm divine approval. Examine their holiness, their humility, their character — not their accuracy or their manifestations.

Sign Six: Occult Objects, Practices, or Open Doors in Their Life

Occult objects are spiritual points of contact — antennas maintaining a connection to the altars they came from. A person who maintains these connections while presenting as a believer is not in a process of growth. They are in a state of maintained access to darkness. And through relationship with you, that access extends to your environment.

Sign Seven: You Experience Spiritual Oppression After Interaction with Them

Pay attention to the pattern. After consistent interaction with a specific person, if you notice sudden heaviness, confusion, nightmares, irrational fear, unusual temptation, your prayer life drying up, your connection to the Word becoming flat — and it lifts when you distance yourself from them — that is information worth acting on.

“When Saul was present, the atmosphere changed and spears flew. When David played music, the atmosphere changed again. Learn to read the spiritual atmosphere around specific people and specific interactions.”
